Overview
When creating a custom form in Birdview, it's essential to understand the different question types and components that constitute its layout. Depending on the nature of your form, you'll utilize various types of fields such as text fields, dropdown menus, date selectors, and more. These fields allow respondents to input their data efficiently. By leveraging these question types effectively, you can create intuitive and comprehensive custom forms tailored to your specific needs.
Note
Each of these questions can be added multiple times within your custom form, allowing for flexibility in design and content arrangement.
Question blocks
In Birdview you may build custom forms using the following question types:
Single line text
This question type is designed for gathering concise, one-line responses from respondents. This type of question is ideal for capturing short pieces of information, such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, or brief comments. It provides a straightforward input field that limits responses to a single line, promoting quick and efficient data entry.
Paragraph text
This question type is designed for gathering multi-line responses from respondents. It is tailored for collecting more extensive responses from respondents, allowing them to input multiple lines of text. Paragraph text is useful in scenarios where respondents need to provide elaborate responses.
Dropdown
This question type offers users a selection of predefined options presented in a dropdown menu format. Respondents can choose one option from the provided list as their answer.
Dropdown is particularly useful when you have a fixed set of response options and want to standardize the choices available to respondents. Dropdown menus help streamline the selection process, reducing the likelihood of errors or inconsistencies in responses.
Single-select
This question is employed when users need to choose only one option from a list of predefined choices. It provides a straightforward method for respondents to indicate their preference or selection among the available options.
This question type is commonly used in surveys, forms, and questionnaires where respondents are required to make a single choice from a set of mutually exclusive options.
Multi-select
The Multi-select question allows users to choose multiple options from a predefined list of choices. This question type is invaluable in scenarios where respondents may have more than one relevant answer to a question or when capturing diverse preferences, interests, or characteristics.
Date
The Date question prompts users to input a specific date. This type of question is commonly used when collecting temporal information, such as birthdates, event dates, or deadlines. By utilizing this question, you can ensure standardized formatting of dates and facilitate accurate data entry by respondents. This question type often includes a calendar widget or dropdown menus for selecting the month, day, and year, enhancing user experience and minimizing errors in date input.
Attachment
This question allows users to upload files or documents as part of their response. This feature is particularly useful when collecting supporting materials, evidence, or additional documentation relevant to a specific question or task.
Content blocks
Content blocks are essential elements in custom forms designed to enhance readability and ease of completion for respondents. These blocks serve as organizational units within the form layout, helping to structure and present the form's content clearly and intuitively.
Heading
Heading is a structural element used in custom forms to categorize sections of content. It serves as a prominent marker within the form layout, providing a visual hierarchy.
Description
This block is a versatile element used within custom forms to provide additional context, instructions, or explanatory text. Unlike headings, which primarily serve to segment the form into sections, description blocks offer a space for more detailed information or guidance.
Separator
Separator is a visual element used in custom forms to create visual distinction and separation between different sections or blocks of content.
Actions with questions
Here's how to manage questions effectively:
- Adding questions: To add a question to your custom form, simply click on the desired question from the available options. Alternatively, you can utilize the drag-and-drop functionality to place questions directly onto the form canvas.
- Reordering questions: You can rearrange questions order by using the drag-and-drop functionality. Alternatively, utilize the "Move up" and "Move down" arrows displayed on the question block to refine the question order.
- Removing questions: If you need to delete a question from the form, click on the trash can icon situated in the upper right corner of the question block.
- Required/Optional questions: Most questions within the form, except content blocks, can be designated as either required or optional. To specify this, use the toggle located at the bottom of the question block.
Actions with question options
In custom forms, users have the flexibility to incorporate various types of questions that offer options selection. These include dropdown, single-select, and multi-select questions, each designed to cater to different data collection needs. Here's what you can do with options in these questions:
- Adding and managing options: You can add as many options as needed to these questions, tailoring them to your specific requirements. Furthermore, you can easily perform actions such as editing, renaming, deleting, or rearranging options to customize the question according to your preferences.
- Utilizing List custom fields: You can utilize List custom field options within your questions. These options are sourced from custom fields defined in your Company settings or Space settings. While using List custom field options, you won't be able to delete, rename, or change their order directly within the question, as their source of truth lies in the custom fields configuration.
- Conditional questions (branches): Options also enable the creation of conditional questions, often referred to as branches. Conditional branching allows you to set up follow-up questions that are triggered based on specific responses to single-select, dropdown, or multi-select questions. Read more about conditions here.
